"The new phone books are here, the new phone books are here. I'm somebody!" The famous line from "The Jerk" summarizes my single citation in Wikipedia. (And I really didn't put it in myself. Don't know who did - which is weird but cool.)
A while back I coined the term witricity for an idea I had about trickle charging batteries (especially cell phones) using ambient RF energy. The basic idea was to use a rectifying antenna to convert RF into extrememly low voltage, then create a "ladder of capicators" to capture the energy until there was enough juice to shoot a little into a battery. Wait. Repeat. And you wind up with batteries that charge themselves when left alone.
Anyhow, WiTricity® (I sold the term and domain name to the company a couple of years ago) works very differently. It uses highly efficient magnetic resonance to provide things like laptops with useful realtime current when near a WiTricity® transponder.
CNN just did a nice piece of the technology.
Very cool. Check out their site. I have to go pick out a thermos for someone.
